Bookstore History

The Beat Vanguard: Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the Free Word

Founded in 1953 in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and sociologist Peter D. Martin, City Lights was the first all-paperback bookstore in the United States. Conceived as a populist literary salon open seven days a week until midnight, it quickly became the spiritual headquarters of the Beat Generation.

The 1957 Obscenity Trial

In 1955, Ferlinghetti launched the Pocket Poets Series, publishing Allen Ginsberg’s groundbreaking and searing poem Howl and Other Poems as Volume No. 4. In 1957, San Francisco police arrested Ferlinghetti and store manager Shigeyoshi Murao on charges of publishing and selling "obscene writings."

In a watershed First Amendment victory defended by the ACLU, Judge Clayton W. Horn ruled that Howl possessed "redeeming social importance", establishing a critical legal barrier against literary censorship that paved the way for Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Tropic of Cancer.

A Living Landmark

Designated an official San Francisco Landmark in 2001, City Lights continues as a vibrant center of political resistance, progressive publishing, and world poetry, drawing readers from around the globe to sit in the famous Poet's Chair.
