Bookstore History
Established in February 1882 inside a student dorm room in Harvard Yard by undergraduate Charles H. Kip and fellow classmates, the Harvard Cooperative Society was formed as a member-owned cooperative to reduce student living expenses by collectively purchasing and supplying textbooks, stationery, and winter heating essentials like wood and coal. In 1916, the cooperative expanded to serve the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) following MIT's campus relocation to Cambridge. Operating under an annual membership dividend model, it grew into one of the oldest and largest collegiate bookstores in the United States, transitioning its retail operations partnership to Barnes & Noble College in the mid-1990s while preserving its independent cooperative governance structure and campus presence.
