Bookstore History
Established in 1947 by Robert D. Haines on Kearny Street, the Argonaut Book Shop stands as one of California's preeminent antiquarian dealerships specializing in early Western Americana, Gold Rush manuscripts, historic maps, fine press printing, and Pacific Rim history. After relocating to 786 Sutter Street in 1969, Robert E. Haines Jr. joined full-time, eventually taking over leadership and steering the firm through commercial shifts—including a strategic square-footage reduction in the early 2010s to weather downtown San Francisco rent pressures. Following the passing of Robert Haines Jr., the business transitioned to its third generation of family stewardship under his daughter, Angela Haines, sustaining the shop's continuous multi-decade presence as an active downtown brick-and-mortar institution and ABAA member.
