Bookstore History

Established in 1978 by Jeff and Diana Krauth, Beyond Words Bookshop was a fixture in downtown Northampton, Massachusetts. Spanning two floors packed with inventory, the store gained a regional reputation for its curated collections focusing on inner development, Eastern and Western spirituality, psychology, holistic health, and literature. In the early 1990s, the four-story brick commercial building at 189 Main Street was renovated into dedicated retail and office space. Despite remaining financially solvent, the owners decided to close the shop in 2004, citing the shifting demands and pressures of the modern independent book trade—such as the encroachment of big-box chains, increasing reliance on online commerce, and heavy administrative overhead—preferring to end on their own terms after 26 years.
