Bookstore History

Founded in 1980 by Robin Moody, Daedalus Books established itself as the nation’s preeminent literary remainder distributor and mail-order catalog, curated with an emphasis on scholarly non-fiction, independent press literature, philosophy, and classical/jazz music. Operating out of a massive distribution warehouse in Columbia, Maryland, the company launched an expansive brick-and-mortar retail presence in North Baltimore in 2006 by opening a storefront at Belvedere Square Market. The shop provided walk-in patrons with deeply discounted publisher overstocks, review copies, remaindered art monographs, and recorded music. Facing rising commercial lease obligations and retail shifting toward online platforms, the Belvedere Square location closed its doors in April 2011. The Columbia outlet and wholesale distribution operations continued until early 2018, when Moody retired and the company liquidated its Maryland facilities.
